I’ve been dealing with pet allergies ever since my girlfriend got a cat. The symptoms hit me hard—sneezing, red eyes, and itchy skin. Tried a bunch of stuff, but here’s what worked for me: regular cleaning and an air purifier in our apartment. Also, keeping the cat out of our bedroom gave me some relief. For the rest, OTC antihistamines have been a lifesaver.

Symptoms Overview: Pet allergies, primarily caused by allergens found in pet dander, saliva, and urine, often manifest as respiratory symptoms or skin reactions. Common signs include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and asthma symptoms, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing. Dermatological reactions might include eczema or hives, particularly around the chest and face.

Management Strategies: Managing pet allergies involves a combination of environmental controls, medical treatment, and lifestyle adjustments. Firstly, reducing exposure to pet allergens is crucial. This can be achieved by keeping pets out of bedrooms, using air purifiers, and maintaining rigorous cleaning routines. Medically, antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids are commonly prescribed to alleviate symptoms. In some cases, allergen immunotherapy or ‘allergy shots’ may be recommended to build tolerance towards pet allergens.
