Handball, often referred to as team handball or Olympic handball, is a fast-paced team sport in which two teams of seven players each (including a goalkeeper) aim to score goals by throwing a ball into the opponent’s goal. The primary objective is to score more goals than the opposition.
Basic Rules:
1. The Playing Court: Measuring 40 by 20 meters, the court includes a goal area and playing area. The goal area must only be entered by the defending goalkeeper.
2. Game Duration: A standard match consists of two 30-minute halves with a 10-15 minute break. In case of a tie, extra time may be played, divided into two 5-minute halves.
3. Ball Handling: Players can pass, hold possession, or dribble the ball. They must not step into the goal area when holding the ball.
4. Scoring: A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line within the frame of the goal. Each goal counts as one point.
5. Substitutions: Teams can substitute players without limit, but substitutions must occur through the substitution area during gameplay pauses.
6. Fouls: Physical contact is permitted by defenders trying to stop attackers; however, excessive or dangerous contact can lead to penalties.
Understanding these rules provides a framework for enjoying and appreciating the dynamic nature of handball, a sport known for its speed, agility, and strategic complexity.
